A Discussion on the Imagination, Borders and Fantasy
Our interview for La Cuenta with Dr. Vanessa Angélica Villarreal is live!
A few months ago I had the absolute privilege of participating and co-running an interview with one of my favourite authors, Dr. Vanessa Angélica Villarreal for La Cuenta.
Dr. Villarreal’s book Magical/Realism lives on my desk heavily annotated with tabs in different colors sticking out of it. I return to it often for reference or to learn something new about myself through her incredible work. Getting to speak to my literary hero was definitely one for the books. Please read her work it means so much to me and I believe it is some of the most important work of our time.
You can read all three parts of our interview on La Cuenta now!
Part one: Vanessa Villarreal on the lessons of immigration found in popular fantasy texts.
Part two:
I had a lot of fun putting this interview together. I was glued to my computer for two hours searching up every movie Vanessa referenced that used a border or wall as a plot device.
Part three: Vanessa Villarreal on imagination and on borders as tools of time extraction
One of my favourite quotes from the final part of our interview:

I loved this interview. It hits too close to home. I have always had a weird obsession with recording videos of myself (as you might remember😅) I believe it comes from learning to be American from watching MTV’s the real world. I understood at a super early age that that would never be my real world. It’s something I’ve thought about a lot during my process of relocation. My want to TikTok and YouTube about it. Awesome work as always. ✌🏽
